🤝 How to negotiate your pay in Web3

GM Friends 👋

In our Bricktopians creator group we’ve had one question come up many times,

So today we’re jumping in to answer:

“How do you know how much you should be paid?”

We’re also covering…

🪂 Care-Package:

A weekly package of actionable strategies to help you Grow Faster through content, business & health.

🧲 Attract an audience:

👾 Live-streaming on X is about to get massive.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not a livestreamer,

If there’s one thing you take away from this entire article I want this to be it…

The fastest way to grow on ANY social media platform is to use its newest feature.

Generally speaking, when a platform rolls out a new feature (like YouTube with shorts for example)

There are two forces that accelerate growth massively:

#1: There is an undersupply of people using this feature

#2: The platform pushes it in the algorithm because it wants it to be used.

Right now we’re in that moment with livestreams on X.

I was speaking to the team at Unfungible (the biggest spaces agency in Web3),

And they were telling me that livestreams have become one of the fastest growing and high demand services that they offer, simply because the views are so high.

If you’re reading this right now and you’ve been on the fence, this is an opportunity to seize. Take advantage while this gap in the market is available.

If this wave of new features isn’t for you, make sure you pay attention to what’s coming next.

🍄 Become Better:

🤝 How to negotiate your pay in Web3

The #1 recurring question that I get is:

“Alex, how much do you think I should get paid for this piece of content (or for this job)?”

AND

“How do I negotiate this deal?”

The answer to this question and how you approach it generally depends on one variable:

👉️ How you got the opportunity.

1️⃣ Pathway #1: Negotiating an independent opportunity

This is a scenario where a brand, job, etc

Has reached out to you one-on-one (or you have reached out to them) and the deal is quite custom.

This is where you are going for the highest pay possible.

How to approach this:

  1. Speak to your friends (or ask in groups like our Bricktopians community), how much they are getting paid for similar work. Get at least 3x pieces of input and use this to guide your baseline for negotiation.

  2. Add 30% — 60% to number. This is what you’re going to offer.

  3. Create a 1-page proposal giving a clear outline of what makes you strong as a creator, and how you compare to other creators in the market.
(If you need an example of this, I shared the 1-pager that got me a $2,800 per month ambassadorship with Polytrade, in our Bricktopians community.)

  4. Offer this to the brand.

  5. They will either accept it, or counter offer. If they accept, congratulations. You just got a pay rise.

If they counter offer, you then offer them a price in between theirs and yours. Generally speaking this will close the deal.

Alternative: If they say “that’s too high” on the first offer and they don’t counter offer. Ask them “what did you have in mind?” — 9 times out of 10 they will be more than happy to tell you, and you can then negotiate from that point.

Why this works:

I’ve been doing this A LOT (for both myself and other creators),

And I used to be scared that if I put a stupid number in, the brand would fully reject me and not come back.

The reality is, how much you are worth depends way more on what their budget is than exactly how high quality you are as a content creator or employee.

If you make your offer high, brands with a high budget will often take it at face value.

But if they don’t take it immediately, what you’ve communicated is that you are high value and worth working with.

Quick review on this pathway

✅ The upside of this path: You can get paid WAY more (sometimes double what you think you’re worth).

❌ The downside: It can take a lot of time and effort to source and find deals. Deals can fall through meaning all your effort was for nothing.

2️⃣ Pathway #2: Aggregated Opportunities

This is where content aggregation groups (or teams filling a large number of small roles) are going out to get 10+ people to post for them or join their team.

Generally speaking with these groups, they’ve assigned a specific budget to the delivery of the project at scale, and they are trying to fill the slots that they have allocated for the project.

This means that there is often less alterations that can be made in the arrangement.

Quick review on this pathway

✅ The upside of this path: Deals are generally guaranteed meaning you don’t have to spend any time and energy negotiating, and the deal can’t fall through.

❌ The downside: With the convenience that comes from this pathway, generally you will get paid less than if you were able to source and secure a deal yourself.

⭐️ My recommended approach:

The best way to play this is to MAX OUT as many opportunities as you can in Pathway #2, so that you have a consistent stream of income and your calendar is full.

Then let that give you the confidence to approach brands and pitch extremely high prices for offers.

If they say no, you still have your consistent income. If they say yes, you then cancel one of your #2’s and substitute this one in, which overall will massively increase your revenue.

🌿 Feel f*cking fantastic:

🤹 Get so good at something that you feel bored

Heard this on a recent podcast from Alex Hormozi,

The way to not be nervous when doing something is to do it so many times that when you do it you feel like:

“Man, I’m so sick of this. I can’t believe I’m doing this again. I’m actually bored of this.”

Rather than “Man, I’m so nervous to do this”

Think about it in terms of public speaking or meeting new people.

Imagine instead of feeling nervous to do a speech, you’d done so many speeches that you were like “Man, can’t wait to get this over with. I’m so sick of doing speeches” — rather than feeling nervous.

Obviously speeches are a hard one, it can be tough to get multiple speaking events back to back for you to host or be a part of.

BUT, the same idea applies to business skillsets and creativity.

If you can do the basics so easily that you feel bored of them, that’s when you get the breakthrough ideas.

I saw this video earlier of someone speaking about this in the context of playing piano. This captures the idea perfectly:

Have a great weekend ✌️
